Are you ready for “Fire Season” in Southern California? Do you know what to do in the event that fire and smoke damage your home or commercial establishment? Seemingly every year, “fire season” gets worse. Here at Scope Environmental, we’ve been providing fire damage cleanup Los Angeles for many years. Unfortunately, there’s no perfect, fool-proof way to prepare your home for fire season. There are steps you can take to help your family to be safe in the event of a fire as well as actions you can take after the fact to mitigate the damage.

Preparation with You and Yours

Most families have an emergency evacuation plan for the home. If you haven’t gone over with your family in some time (or even practiced it), ahead of fire season might be a great time to do so. Factors that are often left out of these plans: what to do with pets and planning multiple (at least two) paths of your neighborhood (not just your home). Designate a meeting place ahead of time. If you can spare it, assembling an emergency supply kit with basic essentials in a readily accessible place is a good idea, too.

Should a Wildfire Threaten Your Home

The most important thing to do in case of a wildfire threatening your property is to evacuate early. Evacuating “too early” is far, far better than the alternative. If you do have time, however, it can be beneficial to close all of (or as many of) your home’s openings as possible. That’s the windows and doors (even pet doors) obviously, but that also includes basement doors, vents, and the like. Again, if it’s possible to do so safely, moving deck/patio furniture, potted plants, and anything similar either indoors or as far from your property as possible may help. As you can see, there’s only so much you can do.

When’s the Last Time You Updated Your Insurance?

Here at Scope Environmental, we’ve been able to help our clients through the insurance part of fire damage restoration. That said, one thing we often tell folks when we’re asked “how do I prepare for fire damage” is to “call your insurance agent.” Make sure that your insurance is up to date with the items and belongings that you have now. That way, you have the best chance possible to, in the event of severe fire damage, get as much as possible for what you’ve lost.
